President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev of Kazakhstan has outlined a vision for Central Asia to become a vital global transport and logistics hub. In his article, "Renaissance of Central Asia: Towards Sustainable Development and Prosperity," published in Kazakhstanskaya Pravda, Tokayev discusses the region's growing strategic importance in international trade and connectivity, as it was reported by TASS.
Tokayev argues that Central Asia has the potential to become a key transit point in global transport communications. He emphasizes the importance of major projects such as China's “One Belt, One Road” initiative and the international transport corridor “North-South,” which involve all Central Asian countries to varying degrees.
Kazakhstan is at the forefront of developing critical transport corridors. The Trans-Caspian International Transport Route, also known as the Middle Corridor, is a central focus.
"Kazakhstan, together with its partners, is actively developing the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route (Middle Corridor), the volume of transportation along which in the medium term can be increased fivefold. New opportunities are opening up in connection with the development of Kazakhstan's maritime infrastructure - the ports of Aktau and Kuryk, through which increasing volumes of cargo from China, Central Asian countries to the South Caucasus, Turkey and further to Europe pass," he explained.
In addition, Tokayev highlights the potential of transport corridors through Afghanistan, which could provide access to South Asian markets and Indian Ocean ports. This development aligns with the region’s broader goals of enhancing connectivity and trade.
Tokayev outlines several key areas for future development. These include improving transport communications by increasing the frequency of flights, launching new air and rail routes, and modernizing border crossings. He also calls for accelerated development of transport infrastructure, supported by innovative technologies, to accommodate growing cargo and passenger volumes. Expanding transit opportunities and effectively utilizing the region’s logistics potential are also crucial for optimizing transport operations.
