In a historic state visit to Uzbekistan, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, the Emir of Qatar, held talks with Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, focusing on enhancing political dialogue, cultural-humanitarian exchange, and economic cooperation. The two leaders highlighted the significant shift in their relations, with Qatar viewed as a valuable partner in the Middle East and the broader Arab-Muslim world.
An essential milestone in this partnership was the opening of the Qatari embassy in Tashkent in 2023, which has been instrumental in advancing bilateral relations. The upcoming opening of the Uzbekistan embassy in Doha is expected to further strengthen this connection.
The discussions resulted in an agreement for leading Qatari companies to invest in large projects across various sectors, including energy, gas, agriculture, infrastructure, and tourism in Uzbekistan, totaling over $12 bn. A joint Uzbekistan-Qatar investment forum, planned for September, will consider funding mechanisms for these collaborative projects.
Recognizing the value of cultural and educational exchange, the leaders agreed to support initiatives such as joint cultural days, concert programs, exhibitions, and culinary displays. Regular flights between the two nations will also be established to enhance business relations and tourism.
In the regional context, the two leaders emphasized the need for a pragmatic approach towards Afghanistan, including economic support and humanitarian assistance. They also contemplated collaborating on the strategic project of the Trans-Afghan railway. The Emir of Qatar concluded the meeting by inviting President Mirziyoyev to Qatar.
