The National Electricity Company of Afghanistan (Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat - DABS) disclosed that it imported electricity worth $252mn from Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Iran in the previous year, Hasht-e Subh Daily reports.
Representatives of the "Breshna" company revealed that the total electricity imports from these three countries exceeded $260mn in 2022. Abdul Rahman Rahmani, the head of "Breshna," stated in the annual report that Tajikistan received $96mn, Uzbekistan received $94mn, and Iran received $62mn as payments for the purchased electricity.
In addition to relying on neighboring countries for electricity imports, the Afghanistan Electricity Company also made payments of $22.3mn to local electricity generation companies.
Presently, approximately 75% of Afghanistan's electricity demand is being met through imports from neighboring countries.
